    How to use this checklist

This checklist helps you see how ready your website is to be found and cited by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews. Work through each section and be honest about where you stand. The gaps you find are your priorities. None of it is complicated, but all of it matters, because AI engines reward businesses that are clear, consistent and well regarded.

    HOW IT WORKS

    1. Clear, answer-ready content

AI search engines and AI tools quote content they can read and lift cleanly, so content quality matters as much as visibility. Check that your key pages have a clear content structure:

    • Answer the main question directly, near the top of the page.
    • Use clear, descriptive headings that match how people actually ask.
    • Include genuine FAQs with concise, direct answers, ideally marked up with FAQ schema.
    • Are written in plain, specific language, not vague marketing speak.

If this is where you are weakest, our guide to structuring content for AI goes deeper.

    2. A consistent business identity

Before an engine will name you, it needs to be sure who you are. Check that:

    • Your business name, address and phone number match everywhere online.
    • Your services, locations and key details are stated clearly on your site.
    • Your Google Business Profile is complete and accurate.
    • Schema markup marks up your business details so machines and AI platforms can read them clearly.

    3. Reviews and reputation

Generative engines build their view of you from across the web, so reputation counts. Check that:

    • You have a healthy, recent stream of genuine reviews, especially on Google.
    • You are listed consistently on the directories relevant to your industry.
    • Reputable third party sites carry genuine brand mentions of your business.
    • The information about you across the web is accurate and current.

    4. Technical readiness

If AI crawlers and bots cannot access and read your site, it cannot be cited. Check that:

    • Your pages load quickly, on mobile as well as desktop, meeting solid Core Web Vitals.
    • Your site gives AI crawlers clear bot access, with no important content blocked.
    • Your structure is logical and your internal links are sensible.
    • Your key content is not hidden behind scripts a crawler cannot read.

    5. Tracking and monitoring

You cannot improve what you do not measure. Check that:

    • You test the real prompts your customers use, to see if you appear.
    • You track how you compare to competitors in AI answers.
    • You keep up regular visibility tracking of your AI presence.
    • You use Google’s AI search reporting where it is available.

Our guide to measuring AI search visibility covers this in more detail.

    6. Original, expert-backed content

AI engines increasingly favour content that says something they cannot get from ten other sites. Check that:

    • Original research. You publish data or insights specific to your business or industry, not just a rewritten version of what is already ranking.
    • Real expertise. Your content reflects genuine, first hand knowledge, not generic advice that could apply to any business in any location.
    • Long form content. Your key topics go deeper than a surface level overview, giving AI systems more to draw from when constructing an answer.
    • Topical authority. You cover a subject thoroughly across multiple pages, rather than one thin page trying to cover everything.

Original content is harder to produce than a quick rewrite, but it is also harder for competitors to copy. That makes it exactly the kind of source AI engines are built to prefer when multiple sites say roughly the same thing.

    7. Consistent, structured entity signals

Before an AI engine can cite you confidently, it needs a clear picture of who you are, not just what you say about yourself. Check that:

    • Organisation schema. It is complete and matches your business name, address and details exactly as they appear elsewhere online.
    • Plain facts. What you do, where you operate and who you serve are stated clearly rather than implied through marketing language.
    • Clear site structure. It is obvious which pages matter most, so a crawler is not left guessing which content is authoritative.
    • Entity clarity. It holds up across your whole web presence, your website, your Google Business Profile, directories and any press mentions, not just one page.

Entity clarity is often the quiet difference between an AI engine confidently naming your business and it hedging with a vague, unnamed description instead. It is a slower fix than content or reviews, but a foundational one.

What to do with your results

Use this as a lightweight GEO audit: add up where you fell short. If most boxes are ticked, you are in good shape and it is about fine tuning. If several sections are weak, you have found exactly why AI engines are overlooking you, and a clear order of priorities to fix it, usually starting with clear content and a consistent identity, then reputation and technical work.

    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

    What is GEO readiness?

GEO readiness is how prepared your website is to be found and cited by AI engines like ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Overviews. It covers clear content, a consistent business identity, reviews and reputation, technical health, and tracking.

How do I know if my website is ready for AI search?

Work through a GEO readiness checklist covering your content, business identity, reputation, technical health and tracking. The gaps you find are the reasons AI engines may be overlooking you, and your priorities to fix.

What is the most important factor for AI search visibility?

There is no single factor, but clear, answer ready content and a consistent, well regarded business identity across the web are the foundations. Technical health is the price of entry, since an engine cannot cite a site it cannot read.

Does my Google Business Profile affect AI search?

Yes. A complete, accurate and consistent Google Business Profile is part of the identity and reputation signals AI engines use, especially for local recommendations, so it is well worth keeping current.
